Clarity Is The Key To Success

Your Are Not Your Customer

How many times when you’re reviewing affiliate products or making changes to your BANS store do you ask yourself “What would I do in this situation?.” It’s human nature to use our own experiences to predict what will be successful and what won’t. Unfortunately, using ourselves as yardsticks may be an incredibly limiting mistake.

Let’s take a look at three people and see who has the best chance of success.

They are Martha, Tim and Jed. Martha was born into money and has never wanted for anything. Tim came from middle class and will always be middle class. Jed has had a hard life since birth and barely lives above the poverty level. If each one of them makes a decision based on their own lot in life who do you think will have the most success?

The answer is neither and here’s why. As long as we make decisions using only what we would or would not do we will never have unlimited success.

Let me give you an example from one of my sites. The other day I was reviewing my stats and found that a search term was being used to find me. This was surprising because I didn’t have a page set up specifically for that term. After kicking the idea around a while, I decided initially not to pursue it. My reasoning was that people don’t really buy that from the internet and they go to a brick and mortar store. I came to this conclusion because it was a high dollar item that I would not buy from the internet.

Then, something amazing happened. I said to myself “Who gives a crap if you would buy it on the internet?” That simple question changed my whole focus. Just because I would feel better going into a store and talking with a human about this doesn’t mean everyone would. A little more research uncovered that a small but lucrative segment of the population was willing to buy this product online.

Needless to say, I added the product page and I feel good about it. Whether it becomes a huge change for me or not matters very little. The important thing is that I opened up my mind to include other possibilities and didn’t limit myself by my own biases.

What ideas have you squelched because you assumed everybody thought like you did? Leave me a comment below and let’s talk about it.

Best,
