Jeremy Palmers Black Ink Project: Review of Week 2
This week we dove into taking our niche and transforming the concept into a finished web site. We covered a LOT of ground so let’s get right into it.
You’ve selected and researched your niche and see an opportunity. How do you now design and construct a site that reaches your target audience and brings them a user experience which is profitable for both of you?
Highlights
The first step is making a blueprint of the site which covers everything from content planning and design to building a wireframe. This wireframe will serve as the template for all of your website’s pages and will detail the relationship between the pages. Our goal here is to build a site which is both user and search engine friendly.
From there we moved to step two or how to design a visually appealing site that’s easy on the eyes and leads customers down the conversion path. The most important lesson here is that first impressions are lasting impressions and what the customer sees when they first arrive on your site can determine instantly whether you even have a chance at selling to them.
Day three had us looking at doing the actual grunt work of putting the pieces together. Jeremy demonstrated doing this using the Adobe Fireworks/Dreamweaver combo. For those of you with the room in your budget, I would highly recommend considering this option. It was incredibly powerful to see how well these tools worked with one another and this was further demonstrated in day four.
On the fourth day, we looked at using datafeeds, scripts and code snippets to build a “smart site” that creates a personalized experience for each visitor. This way, the site never comes off as dull or faded. Jeremy showed us how to get a datafeed from a merchant, use Navicat to build a MySQL database and Dreamweaver to import the data into our website.
On the last day of the week, we learned about landing pages and their importance in the overall website design. They are going to be your visitors first impression and we have to make sure we keep them moving along the conversion path. We will be using Pay Per Click advertising for our sites which makes it critical to have a well-built landing page.
Jeremy had Scott Miller(CEO of Vertster)help him critique some of his own landing pages as well as a few of the Black Ink Project’s participants. Scott then gave his five-step landing page creation process.
