Ok. So this post will probably get lost amid the thousands of articles and stories written or re-published today about 9/11. I don’t care. Each of us has their own memories and experiences and each of us must express them in their own way.
This is my way.
I’ll never forget how awful and helpless I felt on September 11, 2001. Like most people, I’ll never forget where I was when the news broke first that there had been an “accident” where a plane crashed into the World Trade Center tower. Nor will I forget the sick feeling that crept through me when all of America realized it was NO “accident”.
A group of insane criminals had made the choice that they hated the United States so much they were willing to give their lives to kill thousands of innocent people.
Watching one tower collapse and then another just added a huge exclamation point to a horrible day that would never be forgotten. To this day, I can’t see the picture of the first tower being struck or the video of them collapsing without re-living that anger.
But I am a person who believes that even from the worst of circumstances we can extract some good. Here are the things that I took away from that day that have helped me.
- Never assume you are invincible.
- Never leave for work counting on coming home.
- Don’t take your family for granted because you think they’ll always be there.
- Take as many steps as you can today to achieve your dreams.
- Don’t count on tomorrow. Live for today.
