Rebuilding A Blog – The Outline

The Challenges

As I mentioned in my last post, this blog has several areas that need improvement and updating. Here are the ones I’m going to tackle first and a little about how I plan on doing it. I’m planning to write a separate post for each one I feel warrants it. Otherwise, I’ll combine a few of the simpler issues in one post.

OK. Let’s get to it. Here are the issues in no particular order.

Outdated Content

As this blog goes back to 2007, there are many things that either won’t be relevant for the new format or are just outdated. For each new post I write, I will be looking to see if an older one needs to be deleted or at least updated with new information or links. I can tell you up front that I would rather write a new post than update an old one. I don’t think I’ll be deleting a lot because even the  old stuff helps you see where I’ve come from here. Unless a post completely contradicts my current position, I’ll probably leave it.

Changing Focus of Site

The blog was originally begun as a place to simply chronicle my journey from an ebay powerseller to an internet marketer. My main goal was to help people avoid the mistakes I’ve made. Unfortunately, falling for one internet marketing program after another caused me and my site to lose focus. I’m going to get back to my original single motivating purpose of helping entrepreneurs to be successful in life and not just some sub-sub-sub-niche of it. More on this in another post soon. For now, know that I will be discussing everything having to do with enjoying life more while building a successful online business.

Design/Slogan/Mobile Friendly/User Friendly/Code Cleanup

Here’s where the rubber meets the road! These are the things that get noticed first on a site visit. Things like the header, theme, layout, usability, and featured sections. This is where I’ll be completely re-doing sections, deleting others and updating a ton of stuff. For instance, Cool Sites. Back in the day, bloggers were purposely moving these to a separate page. I’ll have to decide if that still meets my needs or if they should be on the home page. You know, stuff like that.

For this group I’m going to take everything I dislike about the site currently and change it. Here’s where I need your help. I’ll write short posts about upcoming site changes and invite you to chime in on whether you like, love or hate the changes. I’ll figure out some way to have a simple contest where a random commenter will get a prize of some sort. Maybe a starbucks gift card or something. Details to be announced soon.

Are You Getting Excited?

OK, I wouldn’t blame you here if you’re not yet. After all, I have basically let this site flap in the wind for almost two years. However, when you see the changes start happening and it really takes on the shape of a place you’d be proud to hang out, I hope your attitude changes. Keep in mind that this series is only one small piece of the content coming your way to help you build a successful online business.

Until then, enjoy the journey!

Jeff
